ইংরাজিতে যে ১৫টি সাধারণ ভুলে জেরে পিছিয়ে পড়ছি আমরা, বলছে অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়

 

আজ বিকেল: একটি ভাষা৷ যে ভাষায় জ্ঞান থাকলে গোটা পৃথিবী চলে আসতে পারে আপনের হাতের মুঠোয়৷ একটি ভাষা, যা বদলে দিতে পারে আপনার চলন-বলনের অভ্যাস৷ বাড়িয়ে দিতে পারে আপনার শ্রমের বাজার দর৷ আর এই ভাষায় অন্তত ১০১টি দেশের প্রায় ৪০০ কোটি মানুষ তাঁদের মনোভাব প্রকাশ করেন৷ ভাষাটি অবশ্যই ইংরেজি৷ গোটা বিশ্বের মোট জনসংখ্যার ৫.৮৫ শতাংশ মানুষ ইংরাজিতে কথা বলেন৷ ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশেও এই ইংরেজির চলও রয়েছে৷ মাতৃভাষার পাশাপাশি, ইংরাজি ভাষা চর্চার গুরুত্ব বেড়েছে৷ ইংরাজি ভাষা ব্যবহারের গুরুত্ব যতই বেড়েছে, ততই পাল্লা দিয়ে বেড়েছে ভাষা ব্যবহারের ভুল৷

অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নয়া সমীক্ষা বলছে, যে দেশে যত আঞ্চলিক ভাষার ব্যবহার বেশি, সেই দেশে ইংরাজিতে কথার ক্ষেত্রে শব্দ ও ব্যাকরণগত বহু ভুল তত বেশি৷ মূলত, আঞ্চলিক ভাষার সঙ্গে ইংরাজির মিশেলের ফলে ঘটে বিপত্তি৷ সমীক্ষা বলছে, ভারতে বেশ কিছু সাধারণ ভুলের ব্যবহার ক্রামগত বেড়েই চলেছে৷ ফলে, বাক্য গঠন অর্থবহ হচ্ছে না৷

ইংরেজি বলতে গিয়ে ঠিক কী ভুল করেন ভারতীয়রা?  সমীক্ষা বলছে, নীচের দেওয়া ১৫টি ভুল প্রায় প্রতিদিন ঘটেই চলেছে৷


1. ভুল: Myself I am Suresh babu.

সঠিক: I am Suresh babu.

(While introducing oneself, it is usually observed that the users mix up both the possessive pronoun 'myself' and the subject pronoun 'I'.)


2. ভুল: I am having four brothers and three sisters.

সঠিক: I have four brothers and three sisters.

(Present continuous tense cannot be used for pragmatic situations such as this. Simple present tense should be used.)


3. ভুল: He do not have a laptop.

সঠিক: He does not have a laptop.

(Do not should not be used after the subject pronoun - He, She, It.)


4. ভুল: Does she has a car?

সঠিক: Does she have a car?

(The helping verb does is used at the beginning and the main verb have denotes possession or ownership.)



5. ভুল:(প্রশ্ন) Today office is there? (অথবা) No office id not there. Today is Bharat bandh.

সঠিক: (প্রশ্ন) Is today a working day?  OR  Are we working today? ‘Yes we are working today or no we are not working today’


6. ভুল: That only, she is very arrogant.

সঠিক: That was what I said. She is very arrogant.

(Saying "That only" was the wrong way to emphasize what the speaker has already said.)


7. ভুল: Last before year she got very good marks.

সঠিক: Year before last she got good marks.

(Phrases that can be used: Month before last, Day before last, Week before last.)


8. ভুল: He did not write the last week.

উত্তর: He did not write the test last week.

(The helping verb 'did' is followed by the present tense of the verb and not the past tense form.)


9. ভুল: I cannot cope up with this pressure.

সঠিক: I cannot cope with this pressure. 'cope'

(The meaning of the verb cope is to manage. 'Cope' is followed by the preposition 'with', and never followed by 'up'. Even professionals commit this error.)



10. ভুল: I came to office by walk.

সঠিক: I came to office on foot.

(We can say ‘by car’, ‘by bike’, ‘by bus’, ‘by train’ and ‘by flight’. However, we cannot say ‘by walk’, as it is the ‘foot’ which is being used to travel and not ‘walk’.)


11. ভুল: What is the time in your watch?

সঠিক: What is the time by your watch?


12. ভুল: Our classroom is in the 2nd floor.

সঠিক: Our classroom is on the 2nd floor.


13. ভুল: The price of this mobile phone is higher than yours.

সঠিক: The price of this mobile phone is higher than that of yours.

(While comparing two individuals/things than is followed by the pronoun that.)


14. ভুল: His son-in-laws have come home.

সঠিক: His son-in-law have come home.

(In plural form, it is always mothers-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law.)


15. ভুল: He has white hairs.

সঠিক: He has gray hair.

(All the hair on one's head is considered uncountable and so, ‘hairs’ is almost always incorrect.)


সমীক্ষা বলছে, এই সমস্যা কাটাতে হলে অবশ্যই ইংরেজি কাগজ ও ভাষা নিয়ে নিয়মিত চর্চা করা জরুরি৷ আর এই ভুলগুলি ঘটে বলেই থেকে যায় সমস্যা৷
