Kolkata: Renowned Sarod player Buddhadeb Dasgupta died at his South Kolkata residence on Monday after a protracted illness. He was 85. Born in Bhagalpur in Bihar in 1933, Dasgupta was honoured with Pdmashree (2011) and then the very next year with Padmabhusan in recognition of his universal popularity and experience as a Sarod player and for his passion and rich contribution towards the Indian classical music for long.
Though Dasgupta began his career as a Mechanical Engineer after passing out from the famous Indian Institute of Engineering, Science and Technology, Shibpur, his undisputed love and devotion towards Indian classical music from an early age, made him famous sarodia instead.
Apart from regularly participating in All India Radio programmes since he was young, Dasgupta mesmerised large audiences in several music concerts not only across the country but also in every corner of the globe for long.
He also has a large number of followers both in India and abroad. He was also awarded with prestigious 'Banga Bibhusan' honour by the West Bengal government in 2015.But for the past couple of years he was not keeping well following the deterioration of health because of old age and was admitted to hospital several times.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee among many others expressed deep shock and grief at the passing away of Dasgupta and in a twitter message on Monday she expressed her deep condolences to the members of his family. 'His death is a great loss to the Indian classical music', she said.
