Kolkata: Italian ambassador in India Lorenzo Angeloni will lead a delegation of 30 major Italian companies at the two day Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) in this Eastern metropolis from 16 January, raising hopes for more investment from this European nation in Eastern India in general and in West Bengal in particular.
Announcing their plan to participate in BGBS to explore more business opportunities in the state as well as in the region in the wake of India's increasing economic growth during the past few years, Italian Consul General in Kolkata Damiano Francovigh said that among the participating companies would be a number of leading private and public sector enterprises which had already earned their names across the globe in different sectors like leather and leather products, fashion designing, metals and railways.
Hailing the tremendous economic growth and opportunity in India as well as in Bengal, Francovigh said as a result of an investor friendly atmosphere in the country, the current volume of bilateral trade and business had already crossed the mark of record 8 billion Euros, which was expected to be doubled within the next few years with more and more Indo-Italian joint ventures coming up in different sectors.
Citing examples he said apart from setting up over 400 joint ventures in the Micro, Small and Medium enterprises (MSME) between Indo-Italian companies, several million Euros worth of contract had recently been signed between the two governments for the betterment of Indian Railways.
Later speaking to Hindusthan Samachar on the sidelines of the meet, the Italian envoy said as Italy had been given the honour of becoming a 'Partner Country' in this years's BGBS, a large delegation from at least 30 companies from different industries had confirmed their participation to look for more business opportunities.
Since Bengal and some other parts of Eastern India were currently enjoying a large chunk of business under MSME sectors, this time the possibilities would be explored to make a dent in major sectors particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, the Italian Consul General said.
'From last year participation in BGBS we have noticed some important developments in the economic interaction between West Bengal and Italy and the announcement of two new joint ventures between Italian and Kolkata based companies in IT and railway sectors have reflected the new relatiomnship', the Consul General said.
He said that one more major Italian company, already operating in Bengal, had also decided to expand their Kolkata office in a big way and added that more results were expected following this year's summit when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be signed in the leather sector for new technologies and training programmes.
'This is an important development in the overall strategy for strengthening bilateral economic ties and follows the mission of Italian Prime Minister Gentiloni, who visited India a few months ago', Francovigh said.
With the participation of such a large number of Italian companies in a business summit in India to inject a renewed momentum into the economic engagement between the two countries and coinciding it with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations, was likely to open a new vista, the Italian Consul General further stated.
Their presence in Kolkata would be more gracious as the delegation would be headed by none other than Italian Ambassador Lorenzo Angeloni, he said. Among the key mermbers of the delegation were Paolo Gurisatti, representing the main national cluster for tannery and leather products (Vicenza), Alberto Cavicchiolo, Mauro Cibaldi, representing ASSOMET, Carmine Zappacosta, CEO Italcertifer and Federico Furlani, CEO SIMEM.
