Kolkata: As many as 52 overseas delegates from 30 countries including those from the USA, UK, Russia, France, Germany and Japan visited 'Bhorer Alo' (twilight), the dream tourism hotspot being developed by the West Bengal Government, at Gajoldoba in North Bengal on 21 January to get a first-hand experience of the unique eco-tourism project.
State Tourism minister Gautam Deb said that the visit to Gajoldoba, about 30 km from Siliguri, was organized by the State Tourism Department and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) jointly with a view to promoting Bhorer Alo for potential investors and for high end foreign tourists.
These delegates, who came to the city to participate in the two-day Tourism Summit, called 'Destination East' on 18 January, were taken for a familiarisation trip to North Bengal to know exactly what out-of-the world experiences the region had on offer, Deb said and added that as part of this trip these delegates would also be taken to Darjeeling, Kalimpong and the Dooars.’
All this is to promote tourists’ destinations in North Bengal and showcase Bengal in International platform', the minister said. Bhorer Alo was a dream project of Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee and the Government was doing everything possible to develop Gajoldoba, spread over an area of over 200 acres, as one of the most exciting destinations for global tourists, he said.
Hailing the support of CII, having a vast global network, the minister said they were also working hand in hand with the state government to find potential investors and draw a roadmap. Speaking to Hindusthan Samachar, Deb said the state government's new Tourism Policy was almost ready.
'Currently, we are in the process of seeking industry feedback’, he said adding ‘the new policy in all probability would be unveiled by this month-end by the Chief minister and he hoped that it would be extremely attractive for investors, including those from abroad.’
‘We have also taken initiatives to promote the Durga Puja Carnival as the world’s largest open-air festival in Kolkata, along with the Christmas Festival, Teesta Rangeet Tourism Festival Bishnupur Music Festival, and the famous Pous Mela at Santiniketan among many others’, both Deb and Vijay Dewan, Chairman, CII Eastern Region Tourism Sub-Committee and Managing Director, Appejay Surrendra Park Hotels said adding ‘We are confident that such initiatives will give international tourists more reasons to come and visit the sweetest part of India’.
